    The Awards continue

We’re going to need a bigger shelf!

The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre has continued it’s award winning year, receiving a Highly Commended Award at the Local Government Professionals Australia National Awards in Canberra this week.

The Centre in Karumba, Queensland is punching well above its weight due to the incredible, ongoing support of the Carpentaria Shire Council, our passionate staff, our vibrant local community and of course the thousands of visitors who make their way to where the Outback meets the Sea.

Congratulations, thank you, and here’s to a new trophy shelf in 2021!

The first barra fingerlings – off to Mount Isa

The first barra fingerlings raised in the pond have been picked up by the Mount Isa Restocking group! Off they go to be released and play their part in helping to maintain sustainable fishing for our growing numbers of recreational fishermen and tourists…

Our hatchlings in the tanks still need to do a bit more growing until they are big enough to be released – we will keep you posted on their development.

  • Eating and growing

    Eating and growing

Can you imagine what it is like to feed tens of thousands of hungry mouths? Ask Paul and Emerson in our hatchery, they are working around the clock to keep the hatchlings fed – which are called fry at this stage in their lifecycle!

As they grow, the bigger fish eat the smaller ones – so a lot of work will go into grading the fingerlings according to their size. This happens every few days once they reach about 20mm in size.

Make sure you visit the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre in 2019 to see our ‘big girls’ – the broodstock over 1m in size!
